You have a high accuracy of attention that you never underestimate. Because we do not come across this situation often, or we may miss the correct link between cause and effect.
Look at the girl in the next picture, what do you notice?
Yes, her left shoulder is a little lower than her right. Surprisingly, when she was examined, it was found that her teeth were not properly sealed due to premature extraction of one of her molars (and molars in particular are relied upon to achieve the vertical dimension of the face to a large extent). And with the end of the girl’s orthodontic treatment and the replacement of the missing tooth, the difference between the shoulder level disappeared!
You will find the same thing about the balance of the body when standing or walking, see the following picture:
The increase in the patch that the sole touches with the passage of weeks are due to an improvement in the treatment of the malocclusion that the same person suffers from.
Occlusion has a comprehensive effect, not only on the teeth and oral cavity but also on the rest of the body.
What is the reason for that? In the beginning, we will find ourselves facing two types of disturbances:
Ascending disorders: starting from the legs or feet or the pelvis, and ascending until the masticatory system is affected, passing through the spine.
Catarrhal disorders: begin at the masticatory level or the level of the eyes, and affect the rest of the body. Because even when one eye is lost or there are ocular motility problems, a certain position of the head will be imposed to achieve the vision in it, and this position will be reflected directly on the masticatory system.
As for the explanation for this, it is the contraction of the masseter muscles in the case of malocclusion without any occlusal evidence in the limb that suffers from the loss of the abutment tooth. Therefore, the lower jaw will turn upward as a reaction, and the cranium will be pulled down on the opposite side, and therefore, as a result of this muscular action, the head will tilt downward from one end, and this will be met by the shoulder rising upward to adapt to the problem and reduce muscle stress.
The body will deal with this position as if it carries more weight on one side than the other, and the spine will certainly be affected by this. If malocclusion is not treated, this person will inevitably suffer from pain in the spine, neck, and pelvis.
Because occlusal adjustment = equilibrium adjustment, which is the mainstay of the so-called “Orthoposturodontie” or the field of orthodontic positional dentistry.
