But when metrics like citation counts and impact factors begin to define a surgeon\u2019s worth, we risk losing sight of what truly matters: patient outcomes.   <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"605\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-6.jpeg 605w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-6-300x169.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n<p>Over the years, I\u2019ve had the privilege of performing thousands of spine surgeries. Each case taught me something no textbook ever could \u2014 from the subtle nuances of tissue handling to the weight of making decisions in critical moments. That kind of learning cannot be downloaded, data-mined, or dictated.     <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"752\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-2.jpeg 752w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-2-300x160.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n<p>Yet I\u2019ve watched young surgeons feel pressured to prioritize publishing over practicing \u2014 even writing about procedures they haven\u2019t yet performed. While academic productivity has its place, it must not come at the cost of technical proficiency. We must ask: Are we training scholars of surgery, or surgeons who happen to publish?     <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"852\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1.jpeg 567w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-1-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n<p>The rise of AI makes this challenge even more urgent. Tools that assist in drafting papers and analyzing data are impressive \u2014 but they also make it easier to produce research that\u2019s increasingly disconnected from lived clinical experience.  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-3.jpeg 567w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-3-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-3-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n<p>Science and surgery are not rivals \u2014 they are partners.
