DMD is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes dystrophin, a protein that helps to maintain the structure and stability of muscle fibers. It is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes myotonic dystrophy protein kinase (DMPK), a protein that regulates muscle contraction and relaxation.
