They often ask, \u201cWhat does orthopedics mean?\u201d They don\u2019t know what orthopedics \u201cis,\u201d or they don\u2019t fully understand everything an orthopedic doctor \u201cdoes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"649\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-2.jpg 649w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-2-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>We want our patients and their families to feel empowered and knowledgeable about their care, and that starts by knowing more about our field. The field of orthopedics started with taking care of children.<\/h2>\n\n<p>The term \u201corthopedics\u201d (or \u201corthopedics\u201d in contemporary usage) is rooted in the Greek words ortho (straight) and pais (child). Early orthopedic medicine focused on treating children with spine, limb, and other bone-related birth abnormalities. Today, modern orthopedic doctors continue to treat children, but the specialty has evolved significantly to encompass treating patients of all ages for a wide variety of injuries and conditions.   <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"743\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-4.jpg 743w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-4-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 743px) 100vw, 743px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Some orthopedic doctors choose to specialize in one area of the body, and some choose to be a generalist. <\/h2>\n\n<p>There is no requirement for orthopedic doctors to specialize in treating one part of the body. Rather, it just comes down to each doctor\u2019s personal preference. Some doctors want to build their expertise in one area of the body while others prefer to treat a diverse group of patients and a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-12.jpg 638w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-12-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons:<\/p>\n\n<p>32 percent of orthopedic surgeons designate themselves as \u201cgeneral orthopedic surgeons\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>37 percent designate themselves \u201cgeneral orthopedic surgeons with specialty interest\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>31 percent designate themselves \u201cspecialists within orthopedic surgery\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-5.jpg 567w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Orthopedics is about so much more than surgery.<\/h2>\n\n<p>Orthopedic practices primarily are recognized for their surgical expertise, performing well-known procedures such as ACL surgery, total hip replacement, and rotator cuff repair. Nonsurgical treatment always is considered before surgery.<\/h2>\n\n<p>Too often our physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and athletic trainers meet patients who have been dealing with nagging injuries for months, or even years, and have finally decided to come to us to see a specialist \u2014 but only as a last resort because they think they \u201cfinally\u201d need surgery.  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-14.jpg 638w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/facts-14-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Patients often assume that visiting an orthopedic doctor means they are setting themselves up for surgery, but that\u2019s incorrect. Orthopedic doctors (and surgeons, in particular) would rather help patients heal via nonsurgical treatment, if possible.
