When the radius bone is broken near the wrist, it is called a distal radius fracture.  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/DFR-25.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/DFR-25.jpg 454w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/DFR-25-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>The fracture is usually caused by a fall on an outstretched or bent hand.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Depending on the angle of the distal radius at the fracture it is called a Colles or Smith fracture:<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u2022 Colles fracture may result from direct trauma to the palm, as in a fall on the palm. It may result from a fall on a bent wrist. It often serves as a definitive treatment until the bone has healed. The cast usually stays in for up to six weeks.   <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/DFR-11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/DFR-11.jpeg 454w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/DFR-11-280x300.jpeg 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>A removable wrist splint is then placed to wear for comfort and support. In these cases, an external fixator may be used with or without additional wires to secure the fracture.
