As a result, the femoral head collapses, and the area becomes inflamed and irritated.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the condition continues to develop, the dead bone cells are absorbed by the body and replaced with new bone cells, and blood flow eventually returns, but the shape of the femoral head will change and will not move smoothly in the hip socket.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one hip is affected in the majority of children with Perthes disease.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 12% of children with this condition, both hips are affected, with both sides not usually affected at the same time. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-1.jpg 576w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1-1-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signs and symptoms of Perthes disease can include:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Walking with a limp, which can be painless <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Limited range of motion and stiffness in the hip, thigh, or knee \u2022 Pain in the hip, thigh, or knee that increases during activity<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What causes Perthes disease?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perthes disease is of unknown etiology, and there is no clear cause yet. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blood flow to the femoral head is cut off, and the bone begins to break down. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One in 12,000 children develops Perthes\u2019s disease. Males are infected five times more often than females, but when a female is infected, the condition tends to be more severe. Perthes\u2019s disease most often affects children between the ages of 4 and 10, who are physically active, and younger. The condition tends to be more common in children who have been exposed to second-hand smoke.       <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stages of Perthes disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perthes disease occurs in four stages:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Phase 1: Necrosis <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blood flow to the femoral head is cut off, causing inflammation, stiffness, and pain in the hip joint. Areas of bone turning into dead tissue (avascular necrosis). On an X-ray, the head of the femur appears less rounded. This stage can last from several months to one year.     <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-3.jpg 576w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2-3-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Phase 2: Fragmentation <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The body replaces dead bone cells with new healthy bone cells. The femoral head begins to remodel into a round shape again, but the joint while still inflamed and painful. This stage can last for up to two years.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/3-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/3-3.jpg 474w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/3-3-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Phase 3: Reossification <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The femoral head continues to reshape itself into a round shape with a new bone once blood flow returns. This stage can last from one to three years. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-3.jpg 576w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-3-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Phase 4: Remodeling <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normal bone cells replace the new bone cells, and the femoral head becomes more mushroom-shaped than ball-shaped, and this stage lasts a few years while the bone heals.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"441\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-2.jpg 576w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-2-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Diagnosis &amp; Treatments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How is Legg-Calve-Perthes disease diagnosed?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children&#8217;s bones heal quickly and have a good ability to self-repair. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of Legg-Calve-Peretz disease allows as much time as possible for the head of the child&#8217;s femur to remodel itself into a spherical shape.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examinations on, diagnostic procedures for Perthes disease may include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2022 x-ray for information about the structure of the femoral head<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2022 MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) for information about the severity of the condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2022 blood tests to rule out infection or other conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-3.jpg 576w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-3-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatments<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The child&#8217;s treatment will depend on his age, the range of motion in his hip, and the severity of the condition.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conservative treatment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2022 activity restrictions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"311\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/7-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/7-2.jpg 311w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/7-2-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2022 anti-inflammatory medication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2022 bed rest and traction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"344\" height=\"344\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/8-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/8-2.jpg 344w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/8-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/8-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2022 casting or bracing to o hold the head of the thighbone in the hip socket<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not allowing movement of the joint (limited movement)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"482\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/9-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/9-2.jpg 576w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/9-2-300x251.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2022 physical therapy, to keep the hip muscles strong and promote hip movement <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"435\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/10-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/10-2.jpg 435w, https:\/\/asayedissa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/10-2-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Surgical treatment<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If non-surgical treatments prove inadequate, your child may need surgery to hold the head of the thighbone in the hip socket. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pediatric orthopedic hip specialist can perform a procedure known as a femoral osteotomy, which reorients the way the femoral head fits inside the hip socket. In this procedure, the femur is cut and rotated for better alignment of the femoral head in the hip socket.
